Brooklyn Terry Interview May 19th, 2010 By: Matt Kee
Brooklyn Terry is coming out to Honolulu to partner up with Soulgasm HI to perform, dj and showcase his new line for the Soulgasm X Culture event on May 21st at Next Door.
Aloha, thanks for taking time to answer our questions.
Matt: I'm looking at the information for the event and I see the word "culture" all over the place? What is the "culture"?
Terry: My partner Aroop Roy and I started "Culture" as a cross culture party kind of a NYC and London meets Tokyo party and it was musically diverse as you can see. Our motto was there are no genres in music but good music and bad music. The party became really popular but my partner had to move back to london and I had become extremely bored with the tokyo party scene and stopped the party. I still wanted to do the party but just not in japan, hahaha.
Matt: Thank you for wanting to do it in Hawaii, the first one went off with you and King Tone from Zulu Nation. But for this one, from what I hear, you yourself, just one person, are going to be showcasing Dance, DJing and Fashion at this event. That sounds pretty amazing. For someone who is not familiar with your story, give us a 30-second rundown of where you are from and what you are about.
Terry: Well I am from Brooklyn (hence the name). Music and dance is just a way of life in any inner city (ghetto). Its a kind of escape from the madness. I started going clubbing when I was just 13 and became popular on the scene from dancing and it just grew from there. I had also been DJing since I was about 14. I was taught by a local dude that used to play at the Paradise Garage as a warm up DJ but he was freakin amazing. I learned how to play on a rotary mixer first so I was never a scratch DJ. I was more of a blend guy. With the fashion man, I cant really tell, it just kinda of happened hahah.
Matt: Since you've been to Hawaii before, what is your favorite thing about Hawaii that you look forward to when you come here?
Terry: Haha I really look forward to this, the shrimp at this lil hole in the wall korean BBQ spot behind ala moana mall and across the street from Wal-mart! Lolol it is seriously the bomb! Seriously I look forward to HAWAII when I come to hawaii, what is there not to look forward to??? Im like damn... who does not want to play good music and dance in paradise??
Matt: You are from Brooklyn and you are now living in Japan. You have also traveled all over, including to Hawaii before. How do you see the culture influencing people in Hawaii and around the world?
Terry: Wow thats a big question so I will answer it in a few words... HIP HOP RULES THE WORLD yes I said Hip Hop even though I am a so called House Dancer. Most people would not know about this dance if it was not for the people from Hip Hop culture crossing over in to the House world.
Matt: Another thing I noticed about the information I've seen for this Soulgasm X Culture event is that it has a very diverse range of music including "Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Reggae, DanceHall, Electro, Baile Funk, Techno, Broken Beat, AfroBeat, House and more..." How do all of the different types of music tie in together with the culture?
Terry: As I said before there are no genres but good and bad music. I am not going to say this to exclude any one but most of the music we listen to is black music meaning the rhythms all finds their roots in the same place. It all just fits, from Jazz to R&B to Rock and Roll to Hip Hop, House, Electro, Baile funk, Bmore what ever, we only separate them because the industry needs a way to MARKET THEM.
Matt: Although alot of the culture is strong worldwide, dance in particular has been in the spotlight recently with street oriented or influenced dance competitions such as ABDC on television in the US. What can you tell people about what to expect to see in terms of dance when they come to Soulgasm X Culture? How will it be similar and/or different than what people have been able to see on TV?
Terry: It could not be anymore different. Culture and Soulgasm is about the culture of dance music and street dance as opposed to stripping the culture for short term profit and then walking away
Matt: Any last words or comments you want people to know about yourself, Soulgasm X Culture event?
Terry: All I can say is the common cliche, "It will be a night to remember" great music, great dance, Great folks and an amazing vibe!!! Peace.
