Hangover Cure Test 2 April 29th, 2009 By: John Fujimoto
Have you heard that you cannot get a hangover from good wine?
Well, don't let anyone fool you into believing that to be true.
My second installment of the Hangover Cure Test is thanks to an evening of fine wine, in which, two entire bottles may or may not have been drunk by myself.
Hangover Cure Test (Part 2)
Ara, Kazoo Player
"A lot a lot of water and pee pee pee."
Severity of hangover: 8/10
Symptoms: Severe dehydration, major headache, major fatigue, moderate nausea, moderate dizziness, mild stomach issues.
Can water alone counteract the effects of a wine bender?
I started this Hangover Cure Test with one and a half bottles of water drunk before I even stumbled out of bed. The dehydration and headache were of massive, head-in-hand proportions. Even attempting to stand still in the shower resulted in involuntary swaying. Shortly after my shower, I finished the remainder of my second water bottle and then a third water bottle for good measure.
Halfway through my drive to work, I felt the sudden inclination to seek sanctity in a restroom. Immediately after arriving at my destination, I ran to the restroom, and then promptly finished a fourth water bottle to replace the lost liquids. At this point, my headache was the prominent symptom, but surprisingly the dehydration was still very noticeable. Ironically, I felt bloated from all the water consumption, to make matters worse.
I pushed forward and finished my fifth and sixth bottles of water before the first hour at work concluded, with this cure not assisting in soothing any of the hangover symptoms thus far.
After an hour and a half since arriving at work, and my seventh bottle of water finished, I surrendered to the hangover and popped a couple of Motrin. Although it took over eight hours to receive any noticeable relief from this hangover, I was able to commence with my weekly wine tasting and Acid Wash.
Final Water Bottle Count: 11
Final Bathroom Break Count: 7
However, I took some time to research the reason for this unsuccessful “hangover cure”. Apparently, the body needs salt to absorb water into muscle and organ tissues. Without the salt, the water just passes through the body with minimal absorption. I guess this is why the single glass of water with the eggs and bacon hangover cure seemed to work better.
Maybe if I tested this same cure with a minor hangover, I may have seen greater success.
Overall grade of Hangover Cure: 1/10
