WHO WE ARE:
"Giinko Marischino is "a nut and bunch of cherries" ~ Cocoa Chandelier
This is the origin of our name, coined by Cocoa Chandelier, aka Sami Akuna, founder of this house of butoh drag modern dance art. In 1994, Cocoa, Summer and Malia, then members of professional dance company Iona, were looking for an alternative outlet for vanguard dance. Finding home in the underground club scene, they began regular renegade performances around town in various venues from the night clubs to art galleries to the theatrical stage. Cocoa's House of Chandelier drag show were already in full bloom when joined by the modern dance girls from Iona. Out of this phenomena of blending drag with formal modern dance, Giinko Marischino was born. A "nut" refers to the inimitable Cocoa and "a bunch of cherries" refers to the modern dance girls and boys in the collective community. Today, Giinko is a collaborative collective of dance and performance artists who gather for the sake of creating edgy and inspired art under the influence of butoh, drag and the spirit of creative community.
( and more )
GIINKO MARISCHINO is a collective of dancers specializing in the collaborative process as a method of participatory art making. With a base in butoh and modern dance, Giinko includes other realms of art such as drag, comedy, installation, music and video in its eclectic performance events.
Since it's inception in the mid-1990's, co-founders Sami Akuna, Summer Partlon and Malia Oliver favored the underground nightclub scene as their playing field. The intent was to take their dance training off the formal stage and out into the world where the intersection of dance and art was alive with invention. As a result, Giinko has performed in wildly eclectic arenas including live music venues for bands such as Sonic Youth and Porno for Pyros, at art venues including The Honolulu Academy of Art and the Contemporary Museum, and at beauty pageants, festivals, corporate conventions and on the streets.
Giinko is decidedly collaborative in structure, with a fluid hierarchy of individuals working at varying degrees of self-responsibility and commitment to the performance projects. This long-term collaboration has over the years included many artists and dancers and is committed to a structure that allows the space for individual creativity. The concept of ohana (family) and social inclusion is the unique process by which the group works. Respect for and recognition of the individual within the group is the foundation for the ongoing success of this dance collective.
