Robot Love at Thirtyninehotel
Date: Saturday, April 24th, 2010 Venue: Thirtyninehotel
Description: Robot Love is a worldwide hub of robotics research that encompasses a diverse array of topics. While much of our work focuses on core robotics
technologies like locomotion, picking things up, and service to humans, we also focus on related research areas, including machine learning, computer
vision, and robotic dance.
Typically, labs are associated with a physical location, (like thirtyninehotel) while groups may not have a shared workspace. Centers and consortia
involve either multiple member lab groups or individual researchers and their robot pals. All work toward a common general theme, such as computer
dancing. A robot that dances generally moves side to side in a syncopated motion, the with an occasion hop from left foot to right. Flashing lights are
not uncommon. Robots That Dance (RTD) is research wing of Robot Love that dates back to the early 1950's when all robots were shaped like a very large
box. Robots at that time were incapable of independent locomotion, unlike today's agile models. Some could talk though, and make rudimentary jokes. If you
see a robot dancing, please do not approach the robot from the rear or side. Robots are shy and startle easily. Never look an unfamiliar robot in the eye.
If cornered they may become dangerous. If you see a robot dancing violently, seek cover behind a fence or a garbage bin and call the proper authorities
immediately. Do not try to apprehend the robot.
Robot Love would like to invite everyone to a party, called Robot Love, at thirtyninehotel on Saturday, April 24. There will be dancing, liquor, and human
beings. Please bring your robot pals.
